I'm hoping it's not an oncoming train. We are dangerously close to going live with our first site... that I've been working on since like... March or something. With the owner taking many trips and being too busy to look and tell us what changes needed to be made, to finally be to the point where it could go live is kinda exciting. And..... now that I've said that out loud, something is going to go wrong. Because that is how my world works.

The best way to get client to take sites live faster is to ensure that they have paid the vast majority of what they owe up front. Get a deposit of 50%, then once the design is approved get another 20%, then once the design has been integrated, get another 10% upon integration, and another 10% upon content completion of initial pages agreed to. Last 10% upon taking the site live. And any items added after the initial agreed upon items are out of scope (OOS) and charged additionally.
Will keep my fingers crossed that all goes well on the go live.

yeah... that would probably work better. This client is a family friend though and got some special treatment allowances. I'm grateful for this actually, because it was the first one so I got to take a lot of extra time learning the system and tweaking things. Probably learned a lot more on this one than I would have otherwise. It was a challenge because she is a designer and wanted everything to look 'just so'. Much tweaking was involved.

I've got to echo Bob's thoughts about motivating clients to do what they have to do. We had one site that we started to build in February. We would do something and send it for approval and it would sit and sit. The client paid 50% up front and then finally at the end of October we asked for the balance of what was owed on the site. We just took the site live yesterday. Coincidence? I don't think so. One other thing that we did with these guys was to layout what was necessary to go live and what could wait and be added after the site is taken live.
To keep things straight internally we have added the customer to our production schedule. If we are expecting content from them, we assign an interim due date and follow up when they miss it..
Good luck with your first website launch. May it be the first of many.

I see what you mean, Bob. I'll establish this collection process on the site I'm going to be working on soon.
