Well... because since you pulled the trigger and told us to go live with your incomplete site, we have no way to connect to your page and it's editing tools.... Why? Well because you need to fix your DNS addresses to point to where your site is located.... Oh you did that? No. No you didn't. If you had then we would not be having this conversation.....

I might need primal scream therapy.

So... what do you do when people make you want to go all British nanny and shake them?

I feel better now.
Greetings Earthlings.

It's been a while since I've posted something ... so here's something: how about the ability to customize the navigation background color?

Currently we are able to select a solid color but imagine if we could have it be a gradient??? That would be very cool and look customized. Since the website background color can be replaced with a uploaded image ... could the navigation background be allowed the same option? That would allow not only a gradient color background file to be used but even small photo image files too. Since it would be a very small area (and thus a small image file), it would not take up much memory or slow the page loading speed down at all.

I know I would love this feature.

Topic "Web Safe Fonts, 3rd party tool integration, plugin" a message from pcvalentine

We recently received an email from a graphic artist that had lots of good questions about web safe fonts, 3rd party tool integration, plugins, browser compatibility, etc. I found Bob's response to be worthy of sharing for all dealers. Below is the email thread:

Is there a way to use fonts that are not web safe?
First we need to define “Web safe” fonts. This simply means that a font is likely to be on a user’s computer and available to the browser to display the site in the font that the designer intended. Since not everyone has CS# suite from Adobe, most users have a much smaller number of fonts than the designer has available to them. If the user does not have that font, then the browser will “evaluate” what fonts are available and “guess” which one to use. If design is critical this can cause some major shifting in the design elements of a page. Arial Narrow does not require nearly as much real estate as Broadway.
Is it possible to use google web fonts or @fontface to embed foreign typefaces rather than replacing them with images?
Yes, you can use Google web fonts or other fee-based font generators like TypeKit. We have no actual experience with using Google Fonts and it is free (for now) and it is easy enough to implement: (https://developers.google.com/webfonts/docs/getting_started). This can be done at the time of custom integration or anytime. This can be installed on a Rapid Deploy application as well, but there will likely be an additional customization charge for adding the desired fonts to the editor. This is not something you can do currently. In a custom design it is specified by the CSS so you do not have this issue. We do not support any of these applications. We did not develop them. We do not have access to the source code. We are not responsible if the end user has problems, but that application will allow these to be placed.
Is CSS3 implementable? I am looking to add text transitions to the navigation elements to add subtle flair to a clean looking design.
CSS3 is compatible with our application in custom design, however that does not mean your user’s browser will be able to handle the transitions.
Browser Support Property - Transition
Internet Explorer does not yet support the transition property.
Firefox requires the prefix -moz-.
Chrome requires the prefix -webkit-.
Safari requires the prefix -webkit-.
Opera requires the prefix -o-.
Browsers are being updated all the time and these are changing but just because the browser supplier upgrades the browser does not mean the user will upgrade his browser of choice to the latest version. If they did, we would have no one on IE 5.5 and 6 and Firefox 2, but the reality is that there are still lots of dinosaurs surfing the web using outdated browser technology. There certainly are browser hacks (writing code to detect the user’s browser and version and supplying what is needed), but these take time and can be rendered obsolete by new browser versions so we try to keep these to a minimum so as to not have to be doing never-ending coding for free, fixing issues that are one off for customers.
As designers we have to take these things into consideration and not jump on the “latest greatest” bandwagon no matter how cool it is. You will find this out when you create some wiz-bang app for a client that looks awesome on your system and your user cannot see it at all. Then, since they have seen the awesome effect, they force you to code your way into a similar function taking hours and hours of your time when what you want to do is grab them by the scruff of the neck and say: “Why don’t you just upgrade your equipment?” and come into the light? What that is called, is working for free. We tend to want to stay free from that work zone.
There are a couple Wordpress blogs that we would like to implement as a type of feed that automatically post onto waxfamilyprinting.com as well in a particular place(there is a .php loop that allows this) is it possible to implement this type of structure without breaking the .asp loop that is present?
I am not sure what you are referring to here specifically. If you mean can you place code on your UIS site to pull blog posts into your website? Yes. You can do this with RSS feeds as well. You also have this ability with Twitter feeds, YouTube, and Facebook.
You cannot use PHP in an ASP/.NET environment. You can code in PHP and call the routine and have it execute on the UIS application in an iFrame. This is a standard function of the UIS. Unfortunately we do not support PHP on our Windows servers. We do have PHP available on our Linux servers as this is where we host our WordPress blogs and other LAMP based applications. You could write a PHP routine, store it in the hosting space of a blog, for instance, and call that routine to execute on the UIS in a frame. You cannot use any WordPress plugin without serious modifications as these are written specifically to work in a WP environment. They expect certain files are located in specific locations. And they expect the application and the MySQL database to act in accordance with the WP standards. The UIS application does not use MySQL it uses Microsoft SQL Server, though both are database applications and similar command structures, they are very different.
There are a couple jquery plugins that I would like to employ, such as, MOSAIC, ACCORDION(for mobile) and LETTERING.JS, is this possible with the .asp structure or will added javascript break the loop?
Jquery plug-ins unless written for ASP or .NET will likely not work without modifications. Most/many of these open source code applications use MySQL as the database function. Some use Act. Some do not require any database. Assuming the code is properly written to execute in the Windows environment, you can do a couple of things. You can save the code to a text file, upload it to the assets folder and call the function to be executed on the page using the HTML editor. Or you can provide the code to us to have us placed for you. If it requires a database to be created, we will need to do that for you.
You may want to consider the SEO consequences of using Accordion and Lettering. A great looking website that cannot be found in the search engines is no better off than no website at all. When you are building a one off website for your portfolio, it is “cool” to use a bunch of different routines. But take a look at the top rated websites and these use none of the items you are wanting desperately to implement. The web is all about the site visitor who is looking for information and not about the designer who can showcase how cool his site is. Flash came and went because the user’s quickly tired of the cool Flash functions that slowed load times and did not allow them to get the information they seeked as quickly as they could.
Lastly, the majority of our clients do not wish to pay for a custom design scheme, do you think it is beneficial to portray a custom design on our site if our market doesn't call for it?
I can honestly tell you that no one wants to pay for a custom design. Nor a website. Nor printing or graphic arts of any kind. What they want is the results that employing a professional can provide for them. If you fear that your customer will reject your price, then you are not adding any value. If I ask you how much is a website and you give me a price then you have added no value and no matter your price it is too high. If I ask you how much and you then go into consulting role and start asking me about my business and why do I care?, and what am I planning on doing with a website?, and what is wrong with my current site?, etc. then you have the opportunity of providing some value to the transaction. If you can add value, solve a problem, generate more revenue, reduce my expenses, etc. then the cost of the website does not matter.
The only place we sell retail is in our own back yard. A small community about 90 miles north of Seattle and 50 miles south of Vancouver, BC. Our trade area has approximately 70,000 people. We currently have approximately 190 retail clients that generate more than $15,000 per month in ongoing monthly revenue on average. We have more than 50 direct competitors selling websites. 2 of them selling Windows based solutions like we do. 4 or 5 of them sell open source application like Joomla, Drupal and the like and the rest selling WordPress websites. The vast majority of WP designers cannot code beyond the basics in HTML and PHP. Most of these do not provide ongoing support. Most do not do hosting. Most do not host email or do SEO.
We still sell 2-4 websites per month in our community. We do no advertising. And we concentrate 100% of our sales efforts on getting new dealers. Of the sites we sell, more than 2/3s are with custom designs – regardless of whether we build them in a rapid deploy application or not. Our clients are as price sensitive as are yours. We are the experts and we act as such. We consult with our clients and tell them what they need rather than expecting them to tell us what they need. If you sell and provide value, your client’s will not complain about the price. Our average price of a website design/project exceeds $3500. This does not include the after sale products like SEO, support and maintenance, and email marketing.

Hope you guys learned something from this, even after 8 years in this industry, I sure did.
Topic "Scroll bars are making pages jump" a message from reynoldsrj

Lindsay,
I am not certain I understand your comment. I tried looking at your site to see if you had a horizontal scroll bar, but none of your pages appear to have a horizontal scroll bar. Vertical scroll bars are a function of all sites. There needs to be some way for a user to scroll down the page to read content that exceeds their browser window height. There are ways to keep a site static and just scroll the content within that window size - this is known as a scrollable Div - you can see one in use on this site: http://www.caddellslaserclinic.com/. Any page that has content that does not exceed the available space does not have a vertical scroll bar. On those pages that do have more content than space available, a vertical scroll bar is added to the right side of the content section.

If this is not what you are referring to, please provide a link to a specific page so we can get a better idea of what you are referrign to as a "jumping" screen.

Bob

I was playing today (like I do) and tried to upload an image into the favicon. I kept getting 'incorrect Favicon type' but there is no documentation (that I can find) on this... so I resorted to Google and am leaving this link here for anyone who might want to create their own images to use.

http://www.favicon.cc/

Seems like it would be handy if the "question mark' icon next to the browse option to upload a favicon would tell you something useful like what type of file you need or where to go to make one. All it says now is basically 'this is where you upload a favicon".

Also, will this icon show up while the site is in development or only once it goes live?
edited by Donna on 5/18/2012
